Kettlebell Training
Another tool used n CST is the kettlebell. Like the clubbell the kettlebell can be used in a way standard dumbbells and barbells can not. The kettlebell, with its displaced center of mass (to a lesser degree than clubbells) can be moved in more than one dimension and gives the user the ability to swing the weight rather than merely lift it. Swinging a weight produces force, which increases as you swing the weight faster. Because of this you can use much less weight and still produce an incredible training effect and great results. Unlike gym machines using a weight like the kettlebell forces the user to become more efficient at using their body. Machine based exercise controls movement patterns and ranges which can be advantageous for rehabilitation but not such a great thing for fitness training where we want to move our body freely and not isolate individual body parts.
Kettlebell training and Clubbell training compliment each other quite well and many CST practitioners will alternate between the two tools depending on their training goals. With as little as one clubbell and one kettlebell you can train your entire body and gain health benefits that modern machines can not duplicate.
Equipment
There are basically 2 types of kettlebells. “Fitness Bells” are made from cast iron and are available from many sources. The size of these kettlebells get larger as the weights go up. The handles on the fitness bells are typically larger in diameter than the second type of kettlebell known as “Pro Grade”. Pro grade bells are of a standard size and are made of steel. These bells are the same ones used in girevoy sport competitions. The nice thing about the pro grade bells is that when you move to a different weight you don’t have to make any adjustments to your technique to accommodate a different sized bell. Pro grade bells are also available from number of different sources. I’ve used and own quite a few of both styles but I prefer the pro grade bells because I find the handles to be more comfortable. Pictured below are two pro grade bells, a 12kg. and a 16kg.
